Notes
Due to a twist of fate a decade ago, we were named Edessa, after a town in northern Greece. We are still playing passionate, high-energy music from the southern Balkans, in the style of working bands from that area, i.e. long sets with lots of improvisation between melodies, and a beat with dancers in mind. What we’ve recorded here is music that is contemporary yet timeless—from an area that has been a cultural crossroads for centuries. We offer you this music in the spirit of a local festival or wedding—a celebration of life through dance and song.
Dedicated to the memory of David Nadel, who not only was an avid dancer and early supporter, but a person who provided a home for music such as this to flourish outside of the Balkans. David brought us our first live zurna/davul music in the mid 70’s—minds were blown and lives were changed. And to David’s legacy, Ashkenaz, our spiritual center, where a diverse group of people have picked up the pieces after David’s untimely death and kept this remarkable place open and prospering. Thank you Larry and the rest of the Ashkenaz staff for letting us party all night!
Joe Graziosi & Steve Kotansky for their many gifts as dancers, teachers, scholars and great collectors of music and dance. Their constant support and encouragement continues to shape our music. EEFC and the Balkan Music & Dance Workshops for gathering the tribes. Contact them at www.eefc.org. Steve Finney for his enthusiasm so many years ago for the music that came to be known as “wedding” music, and his fearlessness to begin playing it. Rachel MacFarlane for her impeccable translations, transliterations, editor’s eye, and great party vocals. Ken White for ground support and good ears, Boaz Accordions of Berkeley, CA; for the loan of the beautiful Bugari. Surekha for her Hindi coaching. Souren Baronian for his incredible examples as musician, mentor and friend. Show us the way!
Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
