Notes
Composer-musician Kevin Budd presents a collection of original songs performed on a variety of wind instruments and embroidered with guitar, piano and gentle percussion. This recording blends the clear, ethereal sound of the exotic pan flute with the warm, rich tones of other wind instruments - transverse flute, alto flute, recorder, caval - to create hauntingly lovely melodies. There are traces of Eastern European folk dance music, latin rhythms, tango, Roma harmonies, lullabies and art song.
Remarkable for their texture and intricately woven melodies, the songs in this collection are supported by engaging rhythms and unique harmonies. Kevin Budd translates the old-world pan flute for a modern audience and infuses its music with a contemporary sound.

Canadian musician Kevin Budd has specialized in the pan flute as both a composer and performer for over two decades. A consummate wind musician, he also plays transverse flute, recorder, trumpet, the Eastern European caval and guitar. About the title of this collection, he writes, "beyond the immediate association of inhalation which is integral to a wind player, Deep suggests an emotional profundity, while Breath refers to the spirit. These songs are my ‘deep breath,’ an expression of profundity and intimacy in sound.”
An ancient instrument, the pan flute is used, in some form, throughout much of the world. According to Greek myth, it was invented by the god Pan as an instrument of consolation for love lost. The Romanian-style pan flute or nai played here has a single line of bamboo tubes which produce an extraordinarily clear, natural and haunting sound.
Kevin Budd is North America’s most renowned builder of professional pan flutes. He has taught at the Arosa Music Festival in Switzerland, performs as a soloist for Canadian regional orchestras, and has played for movie soundtracks, commercials, and recordings. Mr. Budd has brought disparate elements of the international pan flute community together by creating the first Internet web page devoted to the instrument as well as its first Internet-based discussion group, Pan Flute World. This collection of original compositions gathers his best work.

Reviews
"Just loved it. I was amazed by the beauty and variety here. Lovely sounds. I kept thinking, 'Wow, this is so great!' relaxing, beautiful and intriguing. Though I am not a musician, I really was pleased by the variety of moods and textures. I really like the sound of wind instruments, and I own other pan flute and flute and recorder albums, and this is right up there with the best. I have been listening to it for a couple of weeks and still am finding new subtle turns of phrase and just very enjoyable energies throughout."

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
