Michael Diamond was born and raised in Philadelphia, and later lived in New York, Boston, Denver, and Boulder, Colorado, before settling in Northern California in 1987.
His musical career began early in life while taking guitar lessons with reknown folk guitarist George Britton. He later picked up the guitar again while in college in the late 60's where he studied Psychology, continuing on to receive a Master's degree. He was heavily influenced by the great guitarists of the era such as Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, and others and has played in many rock bands over the years.
Although guitar has been his main instrument, he has become fully immersed in the world of synthesizers and electronics, and even combines the two by playing the MIDI guitar-synthesizer. In addition to being a musician, he is a music producer and owns a recording studio where he lives in Marin County, California, just 10 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. While still maintaining a love for rock, blues, jazz, etc., his musical focus has shifted more towards ambient New Age music. Years of study in metaphysics and holistic health have given him an appreciation of the healing effects of music and sound. He is currently recording and performing with one of the pioneers in this field, Steven Halpern. The music takes on another dimension in live multi-media performances with award-winning video artist Ken Jenkins, with whom he is a frequent collaborator for concerts, seminars, and video productions.
In addition to playing music, Michael Diamond has had a 20-year career as a music journalist and monthly columnist for a variety of nationally-published New Age magazines where he wrote articles and reviews, as well as conducted interviews with artists such as Ravi Shankar, Jon Anderson (of the rock group Yes), Suzanne Ciani, and many others. He has also served as a judge for the Independent Music Awards.
In 1996 he released his first album, "Flight Of Fantasy", with Deborah Martin and Preston Scott, which was recorded at a top Northern California studio with a team of gold and platinum-producing engineers. He is currently working on a variety of recording projects including albums and soundtracks for video and DVD, as well as specializing in pre-production consultation.
Accolades
In addition to performing multi-media light and sound concerts nationally, he has twice played in musical groups that have opened the show for Ram Dass.
Michael has also presented seminars in the fields of music and holistic health at the University of Pennsylvania, Rosemont College, Princeton, the University of Colorado, and the University of California.
Two music videos he has co-produced, “Nature Meditations” and “Create The Harmony”, have aired extensively on cable television, and his music has appeared on the soundtracks of “Illumination”, a dvd by Ken Jenkins, and “Sacred Visionary & Mandala Art”, a video from the Global Peace Foundation.
Quotes: on the “Atlantis Rising” album...
“I really enjoyed your new music immensely! I think your engineering and production skills are superb, and the music is both moving and rich.”
Russell Arteaga, Producer
Urbanometry Music & Sound - San Francisco
on the “Flights Of Fantasy” album...
“The music ranges from joyous and soaring to introspective and inspirational, exuding a positive energy that lingers long after the melodies have ended.”
Body Mind Spirit Magazine
“This wonderful debut album is filled with upbeat melodies that sparkle with infectious energy. Flights Of Fantasy rides on the musical artistry of Deborah Martin’s flute, Preston Scott’s piano and synthesizer wizardry, and Michael Diamond’s Santana-influenced guitar. The result is some of the sweetest contemporary instrumental music I have heard in a while.”
New Age Retailer Magazine
Staff Notes
If your experience with ambient music has left you unimpressed, it’s time to give it another chance. The compositions of veteran guitarist, writer and producer Michael Diamond have backbone and depth; the aural air of his music resonates with color and texture; the themes range from meditative to playful.
An engaging aspect of Michael’s music is in its invitation to the listener to visualize. Roots and Wings is a mini-journey traversing the globe from Asia to the land of Rock; closing my eyes to Moonwater, I can see giants moving silently through dark forests. The texture of Molecules of Emotion is a modulating pattern with a melodic flow that practically shimmers.
While a lot of ambient compositions sound like synthesizers programmed to replicate the same composition in different keys and tones, Michael Diamond creates from a global melting pot of culture and life experience. Take a journey through his universe; yours will be expanded. - Matt Kramer, SongPeddler
Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
